Six-year-old trotter Mighty Logan will be looking to go one better in this afternoon’s Dominion Handicap, following a very good second in the race a year ago behind champion trotter Just Believe. He will start this afternoon’s Group One as one of a host of favoured runners in what must be deemed the most open Dominion Handicap for many years.
Mighty Logan has had just the four starts this campaign in his build-up to today’s feature. After good runs off long marks in his first two outings, he was much too good for his rivals third up in the Group Three Worthy Queen Handicap a month ago, in which he defeated a number of today’s rivals. In his only remaining start, Mighty Logan was out of the placings after having to do too much work in the Canterbury Park Trotting Cup.
Driver John Dunn believes that the Creatine gelding has freshened up nicely since his last run.
“His work last week was really good and I would say that he is in a similar spot to where we had him this time last year.”
“It’s not going to be easy with the big field, including all the Australians, but he has proven himself in this company before.”
This year’s race is such an intriguing contest with the four Australian trotters, a rejuvenated Muscle Mountain – back at the top of his game and proven performers Oscar Bonavena and Bet N Win all adding huge depth to this year’s field.
It is a huge day of racing today with the first race at 12.00pm and the last not until 6.35pm. There are some good prospects for the stable early in the day, with an in-form Scrunch looking to overcome a tough draw early day, before an in-form One Over Da Line looks to end a run of outs for visiting driver Santtu Raitala in the last of the WDC 25 heats. In the middle of the programme, Bounce N Beyond looks a good chance in a strong intermediate grade trot, before the fillies Queen Tyron and Celestial Sea take on a classy line-up in the Nevele R fillies final. Later in the programme It’s Tough looks to continue a stunning run of form as he locks horns with another classy individual in Sideshow Bruce out of the Bob Butt stable.
